I Am Married

anniversary photo

It has been over a year since I got married. Over a year! I think I’m settling in to being married. The times when I accidentally call Adam my “boyfriend” are infrequent. The times when I barrel ahead and make decisions without him are infrequent (being fiercely independent isn’t always an asset). The times when I appreciate his partnership and support are innumerable.

In the last year we’ve done some pretty major things – like traveling around the world, buying a house, dealing with major loss – and we’ve done all sorts of mundane things – like binge watching silly TV shows and eat lots of ramen. Without waxing too poetic, I will say that I think the last year has been the best year of my life and every moment of it was made better by having him at my side. I am a lucky lady.

When Oona first talked about her #UnsungSewingBlogHero husband, I didn’t immediately chime in along with so many other awesome women thanking their husbands/partners/loved ones for their support because it was centered around taking photos for their blog. Adam has taken some beautiful photos for me (my Enchanted Red Duster, Vivacious jeans, Anjou lace sweater, and vintage bobble bomber come to mind), but I usually avoid asking him because somehow it turns into a stressful ordeal for both of us (I have no idea why, but that’s the way it is).

However, I’m chiming in now with other ways Adam is my #UnsungSewingBlogHero. Adam supports me in my sewing obsession in so many ways. He understands (or at least doesn’t complain) when I need to be alone with my sewing machine. He is a sounding board for my business ideas. He patiently waits for me while I buy fabric, sewing patterns, and yarn, no matter where we are in the world. He’s my biggest cheerleader. No matter what, when I show him something and say “look what I made”, he loves it.

Do you have a partner/friend/spouse/loved one that supports you in your sewing hobby obsession? What do they do?
I’d love to hear about your #UnsungSewingBlogHero, so share a link if you’ve talked about him/her somewhere else!

Each week this year I’m going to reflect on an aspect of myself and how it affects me as a sewist, crafter, or blogger. It may get deep, it may get emotional, it may get totally silly. It may be something I’m proud of, it may be something I cringe at, it may be something I aspire to. I may say a lot, I may say a little, I may ask questions, I may not answer them. I don’t quite know where the project will take me, but I’m excited about the journey. I’d be honored to have you join me on this journey. Chime in any time this year in my blog comments, on TwitterInstagram, or your own blog. Join me in my theme for the week or make up your own.

  1. There is nothing better than having a wonderful, supportive spouse. My husband goes with me sometimes when I shop for fabric and yarn and he is always looking for pretties for me to take home and loves what I make. We are lucky ladies, Erin!

  3. My hero offered me my current sewing machine (a Bernina 330) which I love! He came with me this summer when I bought my overlocker (still a Bernina) and got interested in how it works (and eventually ended up carrying it home… those are so heavy!). He is sooo patient with the tee-shirt and pants I am supposed to sew for him and that are still just waiting to happen (hum hum…) and he is very proud to wear his homemade shirts to work (and I even succeeded in having him wear one in Liberty of London denim!!!). He is the greatest <3

How wonderful! I’m so happy to hear about your strong, patient, and supportive hero. The fact that he proudly wears your handmade creations (and asks for more!) is a lovely show of support.

  4. I’ve been married a year too! Congratulations! We’ve been together almost 8 years and I can honestly say husband #2 is the best, ex-husband- not so much.
My hubs is so supportive and gives me honest feedback (which I appreciate). I always worry that I spend too much time sewing and not enough with him but he assures me that it if makes me happy, then he is happy. He encourages me and always, always has my back. And, he NEVER says I have too much fabric (which I do) nor does he mind going to the fabric store with me. He even watches Project Runway with me and has opinions on the designs on the show. I feel very lucky and blessed to have him in my life, he definitely makes me a better person. :)

Congratulations to you too! How wonderful that your hubs says “if it makes you happy then he is happy.” Adam does that for me too and it is the most wonderful kind of support imaginable. I’m so happy for you that you’ve found such a great support as well!

  5. My partner loves my sewing, I am a newbie but he keeps asking when I will be good/confident enough to sew him stuff! He does tell me I am buying too much stuff though but when I am sewing it means he can play on his xBox without me moaning at him!
    xx
