Simple Summer Linen Dress

Isn’t it delightful when a few different long-percolating ideas can come together? I’ve had this lovely embroidered linen in my stash for a bit. It was a gift from a friend who bought it for me at Mood when she was in New York last year (or the year before?). She was texting me photos while she was there and I thought it was just to share the excitement but much to my delight one of the cuts of fabric made it my way! I knew that it needed to be a simple garment since pattern matching was not going to be possible given the irregularity of the embroidery and the amount of fabric I had.

After releasing my Ultraviolet Tee I brainstormed a list of ways I could hack the pattern and turning it into a dress was definitely on the list. I browsed through my wall of fabric and this embroidered linen jumped out as the perfect fabric to use! I had to sew the back from a different fabric since the front took up my whole embroidered yardage but I happened to have a perfectly matched solid in my stash. Wahoo!

Making the Ultraviolet into a dress is as simple as lengthening the shirt (you can find the tutorial here), just add more length! I kept the dress in flirty territory and away from dowdy by keeping it short, though I will admit that the length was entirely dictated by the amount of fabric I had. I couldn’t have made it any longer and if it was any shorter my tuchus would be on display!

I’ve worn this dress several times this summer already – it’s a little short for errand running since a baby on my hip pulls up one side to pretty close to indecent, but any occasion where I get a short break from holding my munchkin I’ve put on this dress!

  1. Super cute, and what a great gift! I typically thrown on some little cotton sleep shorts beneath my shorty-shortiest dresses – that way if it rides up I can just pretend it’s a tunic, plus reduced chub rub.
